Dizziness is a common symptom with varying degrees of intensity ranging from the feeling of minor unsteadiness or difficulty with visual focusing to the extreme vertigo, which causes nausea and can be debilitating.

There are several causes of dizziness including nutritional deficiencies, low blood pressure, inner ear and nervous system pathology to name a few. It can be a sign of serious disease and therefore a thorough assessment is necessary to rule out these conditions.

Thankfully the majority of cases are benign with the most common cause being benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV for short. This is a sensation of the world spinning around you and is usually triggered by a change in head position. Typically it only lasts for a short period although when it occurs can be quite frightening and cause nausea, vomiting and anxiety.

How can we help?
A thorough assessment is the first step to rule out serious pathology and find a cause. The common BPPV can be treated successfully with specific movements to remove the cause of vertigo.

As for other milder cases of dizziness, correcting dysfunction of movements in the spine, particularly in the neck can have positive effects on how balanced and steady we feel.

This is because when the spine moves it sends information from its muscles and joints which combine with information from the inner ear and the eyes to help us become orientated in our environment. Faulty movements in the neck can cause faulty information being sent and dizziness can ensue.

At Spine Balance Claremont we can check the spine to see if it is involved and come up with a plan to help.
